MÉMENTO3 [2001-2002]
In the spirit of a souvenir album or ship's log, Mémento was born from the desire to relate and document the experience of the residency. To do this, we asked the artists to supply us with a short text on their stay at est nord est, impressions, thoughts, working notes. To these texts are added photographs of the studios and the works, taken by the centre's staff or by the artists themselves.

LA RUCHE [2000]
In the summer of 2000, five artists came to Centre est nord est to participate in a residency-event titled La Ruche. For two months, they travelled the countryside, worked with nature, and became invested in their surroundings. Their goal was to produce in situ works in the Saint-Jean-port-Joli region, on the banks of the south shore of the St.Lawrence River.

LA CUEILLETTE [1999]
Gathering was born of a desire to associate an artistic event with a place, a history and a singular culture. With a place that also belongs, in a way, to the numerous artists who have kept close it over a number of years; by living in it and by experiencing, inhabiting and observing it, but mainly by allowing it to inform their work in a variety of ways.

MÉMENTO [1998]
Residency occupies an especially significant niche in artistic reality and is currently in full development. In counterpoint to studio work, exhibitions, and the many artistic events to which artists are invariably invited, residency offers a pause, or breathing space, a retreat set in a physical and human landscape conducive to various experimentations. In 1988, the seventeen artists who resided at Est-Nord-Est experienced various degrees of disarray and self-questioning, which some related to the disorientation of new surroundings, and others to the beneficial mix of cultures. These artists from Australia, Spain, France, Japan and Canada, gained familiarity with new techniques and procedures, which, in turn, defined unique creative processes.

PHOTO SCULPTURE [1990/1991]
Photography and sculpture... why this confrontation, why this association? A glance at the contemporary art scene reveals a marked presence of work that associates photography and sculpture. But what are the relations that exist between these two media? It is with these questions in mind that we invited six Québécois artists who explore the multiple relationships between photography and sculpture. Following Histoires de bois, the first event organized by Les Studios d'été in 1988, Photo sculpture retained fundamentally the same stucture: a two-month workshop was held from july 2 to August 25, 1990 at the École-atelier de sculpture of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli.

HISTOIRE DE BOIS [1988]
This studio and exhibition project was launched by les Studios d´été de St-Jean-Port-Joli, an independant organization that includes Johanne Blanchette, Jean-Pierre Bourgault, Jacques Doyon, Roberto Pellegrinuzzi and Michel Saulnier. This event, lasting from June 15th to August 15th, 1988, was intended to differ from what usually occurs in various regions. It was not intended as a public and spectacular event that would exhibit the current art of Montréal or compare it to regional art practice, but rather as a studio session privileging exchange and comparing the fundamentals of two artistic traditions. Thus, there was a return to the notion of symposium, with an accent on experimentation, exchange between the participants and maintaining a measure of isolation necessary for studio work.
